![]() My friends want to visit Cyprus for their holidays. They are planning to rent several villas in Paphos area because they go there with their friends. I’ve found some interesting information about Cyprus for them. At spring beginning snakes have appeared in Cyprus again. But most of them don’t represent a danger to people, as scientists said. “In mountains snake’s hibernation begins in November and ends late in April. Herewith, it is possible to see these reptiles in coastal regions till the middle of January.” - Leading snake expert in Cyprus Hans-Yorg Widdle has stated. Hans-Yorg Widdle, sixty two-year-old Austrian has served in the ranks of the UN armed forces for peacekeeping in Cyprus. He has settled on the island definitively in 1986 and in 1996 he has opened small Reptilian Park close to Paphos town. This park was created for reptiles’ protection, and by way of proving that most of snakes on the island are absolutely innocuous. There are eight species of snakes in Cyprus, and only blunt-nosed viper’s venom is deathful for people. According to the statistics, every year in Cyprus snakes bite 16-20 people, with the latest fatal outcome registered ten years ago. “Here in Cyprus you have more chances to die in an accident than after snake’s bite. At that time people more often die from bee’s sting than from reptile’s bite. – Expert confirms, - It’s strange that Cyprus inhabitants treat snakes absolutely in a wrong way. They consider that best snake is dead snake.” Widdle recommends to Cyprus inhabitants and its numerous tourists to not trying to catch a snake or to touch it. “If you see a snake, stop and freeze. It will creep away, as they are often even more scared than you are.” |
